The SR 17 room (3.80 x 3.80 x 4.45 x 4.15 m) is a formal dining room and is connected to the peristyle courtyard (SR 22) through a wide doorway. The rooms to the east of the courtyard serve a formal function, as evidenced by the figural wall paintings of the muses’ room (SR 19/20) or the sculptural stucco decorations (SR 17). The rooms to the west (SR 25 and 26) can be defined as private areas.
The stucco decoration in the SR 17 room boasts some of the finest examples in Terrace House 2. The plastered and painted surfaces applied to the walls of the room mimic a multi-surfaced marble covering.
On the base area consisting of black panels, white areas framed with double borders can be observed. The outer borders are raised and left the same as the black base area, while the inner part features a yellow breccia stone decorated inner band.
White or painted stucco is a preferred material in Terrace House 2 for wall and ceiling decorations, encompassing imitations of simple and generally flat marble slabs, but also complex and highly artistic molded designs.
