Peristyle Courtyard 27
There are four different decoration stages of the corridor. The first of these is the repair of the lower part of the South wall, where a new decorative system has been created using two different plasters. The large section on the East and North walls belongs to a later construction phase.
For the support layer, materials and painting techniques quickly applied by skilled local workers in regional workshops were generally used. The reconstruction is typically characterized by a thick plaster layer (arriccio intonaco) followed by a thin white plaster layer (intonachino). The surface layer is refined with a very fine lime-based finish applied with a brush. The walls, consisting of visible bricks or stones, were created using lime-based mortar and mixed aggregates.
In the decoration, the division of the space was achieved using a cord embedded in traces on the surface. Traces of the preparatory drawing can be observed (red-yellow oxide), but the painting that fills the interior of the figure is completely concealed. The frame and baseline were drawn very quickly with the help of a straight edge, but the figures were shaded and massed more delicately.
