Banqueting Room SR 17

Room SR 17 (3.80 x 3.80 x 4.45 x 4.15 m) is a formal dining room and is connected to the peristyle courtyard (SR 22) through a large doorway. The rooms to the east of the courtyard have a formal function, as evident from the figured wall paintings in the Muses room (SR 19/20) or the sculptural stucco decorations in SR 17. The rooms to the west (SR 25 and 26), on the other hand, can be described as private spaces.

The stucco decoration in room SR 17 presents some of the finest examples of Terrace Houses 2. The plastered and painted surfaces applied to the room walls imitate a multi-surfaced marble veneer. 

Above the base area composed of black panels, there are white areas framed with double borders. The outermost borders are raised and left the same as the black in the base area, while the inner side features an internal band adorned with yellow breccia rock.

White or painted stucco is a preferred material in the wall and ceiling decorations of Terrace Houses 2, including simple and often plain marble slab imitations, as well as complex and highly artistic patterned designs.
