Staircase 36b
In the western part of the southern walkway of the courtyard (36), there was a toilet (37L). This marble-covered toilet could be used by 5 people simultaneously. Later, a staircase (36b) leading to the upper floor was added to the entrance of the toilet.
Although the lower steps of the staircase are completely preserved, only traces of the upper steps can be discerned in the plaster of the wall paintings.
The staircase was decorated with faux marble and architectural paintings on the upper parts. Three aediculae (small shrines), along with ‘Candelabras’ (candlestick holders) illuminating the two outer aediculae, could be seen against a white background.
Green leaf wreaths were added to the candlestick holders and wrapped around a vessel placed in the middle, in the upper aedicula.
