Room 31a

Residential Unit 6 could be accessed from Curetes Street, which had a staircase leading to the colonnaded courtyard (31a) surrounded by 12 columns. It was a quite impressive structure due to its size (251.5m2), multi-level floors, and luxurious furnishings.

Like the other formal rooms in Terrace House 2, the floors and the courtyard's walls were clad in marble. The large columns had Corinthian capitals supporting wooden architraves (beams resting on the top edge or column heads). During construction phase 4 (around 230 BC), the appearance of the colonnaded courtyard was completely altered, and a colonnaded hall was added to the two floors above it. Thus, in the second quarter of the 3rd century BC, the courtyard reached a total of three floors.

Both the courtyard and the walkways were decorated with mosaic floors. On the southern balustrade, at medium height, a Greek inscription can be seen in the middle of the upper projection. This inscription is a prayer dedicated to the god Dionysus and mentions the house's owner, Gaius Flavius Furius Aptus.
